Embrace your inner dork with this season’s turtlenecks

Publié par le 23 janvier 2014

Turtlenecks have been making a comeback for a few seasons, and although you might have been trying to ignore them, their presence is now undeniable. We’re not talking about the loose cowl neck here. No, that would be too easy. We’re referring to the classic skinny fold-over, slightly dorky turtleneck.

Dispirited? Fear not. Even though they earned their name for resembling not-so-elegant reptiles, turtlenecks elongate your neck and you have good reasons to crave just that.

The aesthetic preference for a long neck is one that transcends epochs and regions. 16th century mannerism painters celebrated elongated proportions, such as is exemplified by Parmigianino’s Madonna with the Long Neck. Three centuries later, the depiction of a naked concubine in French painter Ingres’ Grande Odalisque became famous for being drawn with too many vertebrae. The 1920s beauty ideals included a slim figure with a long neck, and short hair to display it. Women in some African and Asian cultures wear neck rings to create the illusion of a longer neck. The 2001 Metropolitain Museum of Art book “Extreme beauty: the body transformed” reminds us that a graceful swan-like neck evokes youthfulness, dignity and poise.

So, about that turtleneck then. In the third grade, we might have been wearing ours with a corduroy jumper (that’s a pinafore to you Brits) in a horrid shade of burgundy brown – but who’s keeping track, really? Luckily, today’s iteration is best worn under a crew neck for an effortlessly cool look.

Whether sporty casual via 3.1 Phillip Lim, office ready courtesy of Acne and Balenciaga, demure rocker chick thanks to Christopher Kane and McQ Alexander McQueen, ladylike à la Dior or quirky by means of Erdem, Prabal Gurung and Pringle of Scotland; the possibilities abound. How will you wear yours?
